What a handguard does

The handguard — sometimes called the forend — is the front section of your shotgun, rifle, or PCC that your support hand holds during shooting. It covers the barrel and operating components beneath it, and determines where your forward hand sits, how it is supported, and what you can attach to the outside of the gun.

Why shooters replace their handguard

  • Hand placement and control – the shape, length, and surface of the forend directly affects how naturally you can push into the gun and hold it steady. A handguard that better fits your support hand position can change your forward grip mechanics and how the gun tracks between shots and during transitions.
  • Attachment points – most factory forends offer limited or no mounting options for lights, hand stops, or sling attachments. Replacement handguards typically include M-Lok slots or Picatinny rails, making your gun modular for whatever your training or competition requires.
  • Weight and balance – some shooters replace the handguard specifically to adjust the overall balance of the gun. A lighter forend reduces total weight and makes it easier to hold extended; a heavier one shifts the balance forward and can help dampen movement under recoil.

Does it require permanent modification

In most cases, no. Replacement handguards use the same attachment points as the original — no drilling or receiver modification required. Fitment varies significantly between platforms and between model generations, so always check the product page for your specific gun before purchasing.
